Six Proven Tips to Make Your Small Bathroom Look Bigger

Banner of six proven tips to make your small bathroom look bigger

Here in the Philippines, having a big and spacious bathroom is a luxury that not everybody can afford to have. However, look on the bright side: having a small bathroom is not necessarily a bad thing. All you need is just a bit of creativity and out-of-the-box thinking to make your small bathroom space appear to look more significant. Unsure how? Well, from installing the right type of electric hot water heater to having the right types of storage solutions, there are many ways to create the illusion of a big bathroom from a small bathroom.

1- Keep Your Bathroom Walls Light in Color

Dark colors tend to make your space look narrower. If your bathroom is colored dark, you are more likely to feel smaller in the room. Hence, if possible, go for lighter colors over darker colors to prevent appearing claustrophobic. Moreover, light colors can help to add a calm and soothing feeling, something that will definitely come in handy when you are indulging in a warm shower.

Another great way to make your bathroom light in color or brighter is to allow for natural light to shine into your bathroom, if possible. This is because natural light from the window can cause the walls to reflect a soft minty hue.

Unsure what light colors to go for? Well, if unsure, go for light pastel colors so that your bathroom can look brighter, lighter and airier with more natural light coming in. Alternatively, you can try going for a sky-blue color.

At the end of the day, understand that the bathroom color will not change the actual size of your bathroom. However, it can definitely go a long way in helping to create a sense that you are standing in an ample space.

2- Install Large Mirrors

Adding mirrors to the bathroom can create an illusion of more space, while allowing light to bounce from the mirror to brighten up the rest of the bathroom. If possible, consider getting a large mirror if your bathroom has enough space for it. With just a cordless drill, drill bits, and a few screws, you can easily install a mirror that’s up to 5 feet long and 3 feet high.

Apart from full length mirror, you can also get a large mirror plastered onto your entire wall. Doing so can provide you with a large mirror above your vanity counter, giving you and your partner ample space to groom, especially during rush hours!

Just remember this simple advice: get as large a mirror as possible. This is because mirrors can create the illusion of space, and can reflect light, making your bathroom feel a lot larger than it actually is.

3- Don’t Install a Glass Shower Door

Because the bathroom space is small to begin with, it is all the more important for you to do your due planning to make sure you maximize space as much as possible. With proper planning, you can compartmentalize your bathroom space. For instance, if your bathroom is long, then you can allocate the shower area to be in the deepest end of the bathroom so that only that area will be wet, while the rest of the bathroom will remain dry. With this, you can eliminate the need for a shower door.

However, if your bathroom is not long, and you do not have much space to play around with, then you will need to find alternative solutions. For instance, a glass shower door can be great at keeping the rest of your bathroom dry, but you will need to account for additional space for the shower doors to swing in and out. The solution here is to construct a wall divider because a wall divider does not take up as much space as a glass shower door. Because a wall divider is a permanent fixture, it should be able to last longer than a glass shower door too!

4- Install a Shelf in the Shower

To make your bathroom look bigger, you should do everything possible to keep your bathroom neat by avoiding mess and clutter. To do this, make sure you include an organized shelf in your shower to hold your shower items such as soap and shampoo. Doing so can not only increase the elegance of your bathroom but will also make your bathroom look spacious.

5- Install A Pocket Door

Usually, a pocket door operates by sliding in and out. And, when fully opened, the door disappears into an adjacent wall cavity. Pocket Doors can be used to create an architectural effect or if there isn’t enough room for hinged doors to swing open.

With careful planning from your architect and contractor, it is possible to create an elegant looking pocket door. With pocket doors, you do not need to allocate space in the bathroom for a hinged door that swings inward. This will then free up space in your bathroom so that you can make it look more spacious.

6- Install a Tankless Water Heater

Water heaters in storage tanks are bulky and tend to take up a great deal of space. Hence, if space is of a concern, make use of an electric tankless water heater in the bathroom to save space. In addition to being space saving, an electric tankless water heater can provide you with an endless supply of hot water. This is because water is being heated instantaneously, whenever you need it. On the other hand, with storage water heaters, apart from being bulky, you also need to spend time waiting for water to be heated up. Hence, if space is of a concern for you, and if you do not fancy waiting for water to be heated up, then a tankless electric water heater for shower is your way to go.
