As much as it seems like a no-brainer to give your fur friend a splashy good time, it’s good to take note of the following when you’re giving your four-legged friend a bath.

It’s best to wash, brush and examine your dog on a regular basis. Once a month should suffice, but it depends on how thick the fur is or how oily the skin becomes. If your dog needs more odour control, he may need a bath every week or every few days. Naturally, dogs have oils on their skin which help prevent dirt from sticking to their skin. Like humans, excessive bath time can cause skin and coat problems as it could wash away your dog’s protective skin oils.

• Where should I shower my dog?                   

Sinks are perfect for bathing puppies, while a bathtub and the showers fit medium to big dogs better. Interestingly, many dogs get anxious when there’s running water and they also dislike the sound of it. To calm them down and help train them to enjoy bath time, run the water (in the tub or handheld shower) before putting him in.

• What is the best water temperature for my dog?

The best temperature would be 37 degrees Celsius. Many people either use water that is too cold or too warm to shower their dogs. Water that is too warm can be uncomfortable for the dog and in some cases: dangerous. You might overheat, or worse, burn their skin unknowingly. Plus, hot water increases the risk of drying out your dog’s skin, causing lasting discomfort and itching, which is why you shouldn’t typically wash him more than once a month or so. Sometimes when the weather is too hot, you would think using cold water can cool them down. But dogs are like humans too, and they don’t quite enjoy cold water just like us. Make sure to keep the space for the shower warm and free of drafts lest your little furry friend suffers from the shivers.
